THE EVEN MORE HIDDEN GROUP
Another passion of ours is reaching out to female disordered gamblers. We know that the female audience has been targeted just as aggressively as the male audience over the past few years.
The male audience is predominantly targeted through sports and the ‘lad culture’ and females have been targeted through Bingo. The countless adverts we see before/during/after female orientated TV shows where we see Bingo being advertised as a fun and female thing to do has led to the explosion in the number of female disordered gamblers.
A HARMLESS GAME OF BINGO?
This is no surprise to us. Whilst bingo is indeed generally a harmless and fun form of gambling for the most, we know that bingo was never the real target. Once you signed up online and created your account, it wasn’t the bingo custom that the gambling companies wanted from you in the main – it was the lucrative casino side of their platforms that they wanted you on asap.
THERE’S NO DIFFERENCE
These platforms – roulette, fruit machine style games amongst others, is where the money is at for the gambling companies and we see no difference in females or males being susceptible to being nurtured into disordered gambling. In fact we have actually seen for ourselves that females that are suffering from mental illnesses and gambling disorder traits, seem to be affected more.
We recognise that the taboo of disordered gambling has been slowly diminishing, thanks in-part to the media and thanks in-part to strong individuals that are able to tell their stories publicly. However, we also recognise that gambling is still seen as a very male-dominated activity and we worry that female disordered gamblers are put off about speaking out and seeking the help they need.
